[Growing Story of Genius Violinist 'Sarah Chang']
지난 5월 장영주(張永宙 1980~ 필라델피아)의 한국공연에 앞서 나온 베스트앨범 (EMI)의 재킷 타이틀에는 'Sarah Chang - The Young Virtuoso'라고 되어있다. 4살때 바이얼린을 시작, 8살에 뉴욕필과 협연하며 신동소리를 듣던 장영주는 이제 27세의 성숙한 숙녀이면서 Virtuoso, 즉 거장 (巨匠)으로 불리어지는 큰 별이 되었다.
겨우 두살 반에 아버지가 켜는 바이얼린의 장조와 단조를 구분하고 "아빠, 왜 슬퍼요?" 라고 물었다는 타고난 음감(音感)의 천재가 뉴욕필과의 첫 협연무대에 서던 날, 지휘자 주빈 메타는 청중들에게 "하늘이 내려주신 음악천사가 우리 곁에 왔다"고 소개했고 연주가 끝나자 10분간 기립박수를 받았다는 새라 장. 최고의 연주자에게만 주어진다는 The Avery Fisher 상을 1999년에 받은 장영주는 현란한 기교와 풍부한 표현력 그리고 생동감 넘치는 개성있는 연주로 전 세계 클래식 팬들을 한없이 매료시키고 있다.

| Sarah Chang (born December 10, 1980) is a Korean American violinist with Korean nationality.
Chang was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of Korean heritage. At age two she could distinguish between major and minor tone. She asked her parents for a violin at the age of 3 and auditioned for the Juilliard School at 6 playing the Bruch Violin Concerto. She was admitted into the studio of Dorothy DeLay, violin teacher to some of the world's great violinists including Itzhak Perlman, Midori Goto, Gil Shaham, Shlomo Mintz and many others, including Chang's father. She was also taught by Hyo Kang, a former student and assistant of DeLay.
Chang was recognized as a child prodigy early on and when she was 8, was given the opportunity to audition with such names as Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti, who were working, respectively, with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Both gave her immediate engagements. At 9, she was possibly the youngest violinist ever to record. Her teacher in an interview claimed that no one had ever seen "anything like her".
Yehudi Menuhin has called her "the most wonderful, the most perfect, the most ideal violinist I have ever heard". The Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Colin Davis, André Previn and Julian Lloyd Webber are just a few among the classical greats that she has already worked or recorded with. At this writing, she is 27 years old.
